If you've ever left the salon with a beautiful, cool blonde and watched it turn warm and yellow a few weeks later, a toner is the missing piece of the puzzle.
What is a toner?
A toner is a gentle, semi-permanent colour that adjusts the tone of your hair without changing how light or dark it is. Lightening (with foils or balayage) lifts your natural pigment, but it often leaves hair looking yellow, orange or "brassy". Toner neutralises those unwanted tones so you get the shade you actually wanted: a soft ash, a creamy champagne, a warm honey or a clean, bright blonde.
Think of it as the finishing touch. The lightening gets you to the right level, and the toner gets you to the right colour.
What does a toner do?
Cancels brassiness. Violet-based toners neutralise yellow; blue-based toners neutralise orange.
Adds shine. Toners are glossy, so hair looks healthier and reflects more light.
Refreshes faded blonde. A toner appointment brings back that just-done look without redoing your whole colour.
Personalises your shade. Cool, neutral or warm: it all comes down to the toner.
Who needs a toner?
Almost anyone with blonde, balayage or highlighted hair. It's also useful for brunettes who've added lightness, and for grey blending if you'd like a softer finish. If your colour looks flat, yellow or "off" compared to when you first had it done, it's probably time.
How long does a toner last?
Usually around four to six weeks, though it depends on your hair porosity, how often you wash it and what products you use. Heat, sun, chlorine and hard water all fade toner faster. Blonde hair is also more porous, so it holds tone less well.
That's why many blondes book a toner between full colour appointments. It's a quick, affordable way to keep your colour looking fresh.
How to make your toner last
Wash less often. Every wash fades tone, so stretch it where you can.
Use a purple shampoo, but not every wash. Once a week is plenty. Too much can leave hair dull or slightly purple.
Rinse cooler. Hot water opens the hair cuticle and lets colour escape.
Protect from heat. Use a heat protectant before blow drying or styling.
Guard against the sun and pool. Both strip tone quickly in an Auckland summer.

Toner vs a full colour appointment
A toner only adjusts tone. It can't lift hair lighter or cover regrowth. If your roots have grown out a lot or you want a significant change, you'll need lightening first. Not sure which you need?
